Alex Hales: A Special Commodity From England

Who is Alex Hales?

An aggressive opening batsman, Alex Hales has played for England in all three formats. Once tipped as Alastair Cook’s long-term opening partner, Hales’ Test career was short but has enjoyed more success for England in white ball cricket. Alex Hales was the first England player to score a century in a T20 international match, hitting an unbeaten 116* against Sri Lanka 2014. Due to his destructive capabilities, the right-hander has been one of the select group of English players to have played in the IPL.

Alex Hales: Test Cricket

For many years, England struggled to find a long-term opening partner for Alastair Cook. Hales was one of Cook’s opening partners and he opened the batting for England in eleven Test matches. Although he never made a century opening the batting for England in Test cricket, Hales made five fifties with a top score of 94 against Sri Lanka in 2016. Although eleven Test matches may sound like a long time, in reality, his career spanned from December 2015 to August 2016. He ended up scoring 573 runs at an average of 27.28. These numbers did not justify another opportunity for Alex Hales and he ended his Test career abruptly.

Hales’ Test career has been dwarfed by his white ball career. He has played over fifty ODIs and over fifty T20Is for England. He made his T20I debut in August of 2011, in a match against India at Manchester. His debut was the worst possible start to his T20I career, as Alex registered a two ball duck while opening the batting. However, since then, Alex Hales’ T20I career has gone from strength to strength. In his second match, against the West Indies, Hales hit an unbeaten 62 off 48 balls to steer England to a ten-wicket win. Over the years he has played many memorable innings. His 94 against Australia in 2013 comes to mind, as does his special century against Sri Lanka. In early 2014, Hales became the first English player to score a T20I century as he smashed 116* (64) in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

Alex Hales: ICC World T20 2020

With both Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy settling in nicely, it is unclear whether Hales will be a part of the upcoming ICC World T20, but if he does, it would certainly be a pleasure to watch him bat. The World Cup will be played from the 15th of November and will be hosted by Australia.

Alex Hales: One Day International Cricket

Alex Hales is as destructive an ODI player as he is a T20I player. He has played over fifty ODIs for England and while he started off as an opener, he has batted at three for England on numerous occasions. However, Hales’ most memorable ODI innings came when he was opening the batting in 2016 against Pakistan. In that match, Alex Hales hit a sublime 171 as England posted a record-breaking 444/3 in their fifty overs. Alex Hales innings of 171 was the highest score by an Englishman at that time, but it has now been surpassed by Jason Roy’s 180 against Australia in the 2017-18 season. With six hundred and thirteen fifties, Alex Hales has been a key part of England’s ODI revolution.

Despite setting his sights on playing in the IPL for several years, Hales only made his IPL debut in 2018. Even then, he was still not bought in the original auction. Instead, Alex Hales was drafted into the Sunrisers Hyderabad after their captain, and opening batsman, David Warner resigned. This was in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal that shook world cricket. Well, one man’s loss is another man’s gain, so Alex Hales was finally given an opportunity to play in the IPL. Hales played six matches for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL and had a mediocre season. A high score of 45 against the Rajasthan Royals, which came on debut, was his best innings of the season. He ended up scoring 148 runs in six innings, at an average of just below 25. These runs came at a decent strike rate of 125. While this was a promising start to his IPL career, Alex Hales would probably be disappointed with his debut IPL season.

Alex Hales: Indian Premier League 2019

As mentioned earlier, the right-handed batsman did not actually get bought in the 2018 IPL Auction. His base price was 1 crore and he did not attract any bidders. Off the back of his 2018 IPL season, it is not clear if Alex Hales will be picked up in the 2019 IPL Auction. David Warner is likely to be returning to the tournament next year and so he could squeeze Alex Hales out of an opening spot. If Alex Hales is to play in the 2019 IPL, he should go in at a base price lower than 1 crore.
