Afif Hossain: Bangladesh Cricketer

Afif Hossain is a product of the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) which is the largest sports institute in Bangladesh. Other cricketers to have attended the BKSP are Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. Like Shakib, Afif Hossain is an all-rounder, batting left-handed and bowling right arm spin. Afif was one of the players of the tournament in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, starring with both the bat and ball. After his phenomenal tournament, Afif Hossain earned a call-up to Bangladesh’s international side for a T20I.

One of the benefits franchise T20 tournaments have, is that gives young players a chance to play alongside some of the world’s best. This was the case for Hossain, who made his Bangladeshi Premier League debut when he was just 17. To the amazement of everyone watching, the all-rounder picked up a five-wicket haul on his debut. This made him the youngest bowler to take a five-for in T20 history. One of the victims of Afif Hossain’s five-for was the “Universe Boss” Chris Gayle. This was just the beginning for Afif Hossain.

Afif had played lots of cricket for Bangladesh’s U-19 team prior to the 2018 U-19 World Cup. During the 2016 U-19 Asia Cup, Afif Hossain was named as Bangladesh’s vice-captain. During the 2018 U-19 World Cup, Hossain was Bangladesh’s best player and one of the stand-out performers in the tournament. He scored 276 runs at an average of 46, scoring four fifties in six matches. In addition to these huge runs, the youngster ended up taking eight wickets. He was one of the top ten run-scorers in the competition, which is very impressive given that most people consider him to be a bowling all-rounder. The 2018 U-19 World Cup showcased the youngster Afif’s ability and fans compared his batting to that of Tamim Iqbal.

Bangladesh’s last game in the U-19 World Cup came on January 31st and Afif Hossain made his international debut on February 15th. It was a roller coaster few months for the all-rounder. Afif Hossain made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka at Dhaka. Bangladesh handed three other players debuts in that match as well. Bangladesh batted first and posted 193/5, buy Afif Hossain got a second ball duck. Afif Hossain’s bowling was slightly below-par as well, ending with figures of 2-0-26-1. The one wicket he did pick up was a crucial one, that of the opener Kusal Mendis.

Afif Hossain: T20 Cricket

Following on from his T20I debut, Hossain spent some time playing for the Bangladesh A team during the summer of 2018. Hossain played several matches against Sri Lanka A in Bangladesh, then went on tour to Ireland to play against Ireland A. He has had reasonable success for the Bangladesh A team, scoring an unbeaten 35 in his first match in Ireland.

Considering the ICC World T20 2020 is around the corner, by then, it certainly seems like Hossain will be a groomed man and all set to apply his trade in Australia. Yes, it might not spin enough in Australia but let’s not forget, just like Shakib, he is equally handy with the willow in hand as well and could certainly come in quite handy. While some even compare the youngster to Tamim Iqbal and we will leave it to that.
